Sports Performance Enhancement

Athletes of all levels continually seek improvement of their skills. Traditionally, this has been addressed through regimented generalized "practice" sessions. As the science of athletic performance has advanced, many individualized techniques have evolved to improve athletic performance. This type of approach, combined with traditional practice, can improve the skill level of essentially all athletes. Here at The Orthopedic Sports Clinic, we have developed a Sports Performance Enhancement program to help athletes not only meet, but exceed their goals.

Markell Marler, FAFS

Markell received her B.S. in Kinesiology and B.S in Business Management from Houston Baptist University where she graduated summa cum laude and was awarded "Kinesiology Student of the Year". She is a Fellow of Applied Functional Science through the Gray Institute for Functional Transformation, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Markell has successfully trained athletes in many capacities since 2001. Prior to coming to The Orthopedic Sports Clinic, she was the Director of Wellness at a sports physical therapy clinic working with all levels of athletes and individuals. As a biomechanical specialist, she specializes in performance enhancement and wellness, striving to help everyone meet their goals. Markell also coaches swimming and is a competitive U.S. Masters swimmer and Ironman triathlete. "I am passionate about what I do because I love helping people reach their potential, no matter what their goals are."

Sports Performance Enhancement combines the biologic potential of the body with Applied Functional Science to maximize each individual's potential. At the core, the program is designed to increase flexibility, gain power and speed, improve balance and stability, and increase endurance. Outcome examples in the areas have demonstrated improvement in abdominal core strength of 40%, and 20% improvement in vertical jump and short range agility. The program is tailored to the athlete's needs and goals such as:

- Athletes that are looking to excel in their sport, both youth and adult
- Athletes that are looking to return to their sport after an injury
- Individuals that have been injured and want to return to their pre-injury activities or weight
- Competitive athletes that want to prevent injury in their sport
- Individuals that want to prevent injuries in their daily life
- Individuals that want to start training for an athletic event, such as a 5K, triathlon, or a half & full marathon
- Individuals that want to lose weight
Each program is individualized, and can further address sport specific skills. These skills include explosive power training, neuromuscular control, proprioception training, and skill specific motion analysis. While all of this may sound complicated, the program is designed for all ages and all abilities. In fact, such programs have documented decreased injury rates when incorporated into sports activities.
