Mark Provenzano M.D.Orthopedic Surgeon

Mark Provenzano, M.D. is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, and knee and shoulder surgery. In addition to certification by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Provenzano has a sub-specialty certificate of added qualification in Sports Medicine, having met educational, surgical experience, clinical practice, and testing requirements. He continues to be re-certified on a regular basis.

A native Houstonian, Dr. Provenzano graduated from Rice University with a B.A. in biology and psychology. In addition to his premedical work, he also performed research in the biomechanics of sports techniques as well as the psychology of sports competition. He graduated as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, finishing in the top 10 of his class in just three years. Dr. Provenzano completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution. He received the Harrington Award for excellence in orthopedic surgery while serving as Chief Resident.

Dr. Provenzano has a long interest in medicine, having worked as an operating room orderly in his youth, as well as working as an operating room technician while attending college and medical school. He has participated in the development of arthroscopic techniques including basic research, instrument development, and procedure modifications, especially involving ACL knee reconstructive surgery and arthroscopic shoulder surgery. An avid community member, Dr. Provenzano has volunteered his services across outreach programs, the Shriner’s Hospital for Cripple Children, and is a former President of the Gulf Coast Regional Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Key to his philosophy, Dr. Provenzano tries to understand and appreciate the extreme amount of work and dedication that goes into athletic excellence. By the same token, he understands the heartbreak and devastation that can occur as a result of injury, and takes it as his own personal challenge to bring back the athlete not only to their pre-injury state, but better. His philosophy is also reflected in his lifestyle, having a varied and diverse interest in many athletic endeavors. Dr. Provenzano is a veteran of over 25 marathons, having completed the Abbott World Marathon Majors (Boston, New York, Chicago, London, Berlin, & Tokyo marathons). He has a top 10 divisional finish in the Houston Marathon, and recently completed the Lavaman Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys skiing in the winter, and especially fly fishing in the summer.

Dr. Provenzano is the founding member of The Orthopedic Sports Clinic, and has been instrumental in developing a full-service sports clinic, encompassing elite certified surgeons, experienced certified rehabilitation specialists, certified physician assistants, diagnostics including digital x-ray and MRI, all on site. The clinic is adjacent to West Houston Surgicare, an affiliate of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, where outpatient surgery is performed.

Dr. Provenzano is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a member of multiple professional societies at the local, state, and national level.
